Auditors’ work is valuable when conclusions are based on appropriate analyses and evaluations.

What sampling techniques are in use and how to use them? How to select an audit sample from a population? How to perform sampling techniques? How to obtain sufficient, reliable, relevant, useful data? This workshop provides an overview of statistical sampling techniques that are appropriate for audit engagements.

What you will learn

This workshop aims to address audit sampling methodologies and it will look into types of sampling techniques in audit. It will enable auditors to practice statistical sampling techniques, including attribute sampling, monetary unit sampling, and variable sampling. Through cases participants will able to apply proper sampling approach to stated audit question.

During this workshop we will discuss:

  • Different types of sampling and when to use them
  • Relation between materiality, sampling risk and reliability
  • Place of (statistical) sampling in an audit
  • Planning, execution and evaluation of statistical sampling
  • Understanding the outcome of statistical sampling

How you will benefit

The three-day training in the workshop format will be facilitated by experts from the Central Audit Service, the Ministry of Finance of the Netherlands. It will be based on practical examples and concrete experiences. Short theoretical presentations will be followed by group work exercises (these will be based on real examples from the public sector practice).

During this workshop participants will practice the following sampling techniques:

  • Determination of the population
  • How to determine the sample size
  • Methods for selection the items (simple random vs systematic random)
  • Determination of the Most Likely Error (MLE) and the Potential Error (PE)
  • Relation between MLE/PE and materiality

Who should attend

The workshop has been designed primarily for auditors working in the public sector organizations that have working experience with audit sampling methodologies.

Requirements

The workshop will be highly participatory. Participants will have the opportunity to share experience and knowledge.

Event will be in ENGLISH only. No Translation will be provided.
