The Impact of Coaching on My Professional Journey

Shanoela Berisha reflects on her experience within the WeCoach component of the EU-funded “WeLead: EU Scheme for Young Professionals in the Western Balkans” project. In her reflection, she shares how the coaching process supported her during an important period of professional transition, helping her gain greater clarity about her goals, priorities, and future direction. Through reflective conversations and practical guidance, the experience strengthened her self-awareness, decision-making, and confidence in taking meaningful steps forward in her professional journey.

How has coaching supported you, what have you gained from it, and has anything in your life or work shifted as a result?

I started this program at a time when I was considering a transition in my professional life. I had many questions about my direction and what I wanted to pursue next. The coaching sessions with Goran Gakidev helped me gain greater clarity about both my short-term and long-term goals. Through his thoughtful questions, I started to reflect more deeply on my ambitions, my choices, and the path I want to follow. His approach challenged me to pause and carefully consider my priorities. Over time, my thoughts became more structured, and I developed a clearer understanding of the steps I need to take moving forward.

The process also gave me the opportunity to openly discuss my thoughts and uncertainties, including doubts about my current professional direction. Expressing these things out loud helped helped me better understand them and allowed me to be more honest with myself about what I truly want for the future.
The support was also very practical. His guidance encouraged me to take concrete steps toward my career goals and transform ideas into action. As a result, I developed a stronger sense of direction, and my plans began to feel more achievable and realistic.

I am grateful for this experience and for the support during such an important stage of my professional journey.

What did the process of learning and self-discovery look like for you?

The process was highly reflective and personally valuable. Each coaching session provided space to pause and think about my experiences, my goals, and the choices I have made in my career. Each session felt like a conversation that helped me see things more clearly. Sometimes even a simple question would lead to a new realization about my priorities or way of thinking. Over time, these conversations increased my self-awareness and helped me approach decisions about my future with greater clarity, confidence, and thoughtfulness.

What insights or capabilities have you gained through coaching that will help you contribute to policymaking, public administration reform, and/or EU accession?

Through the coaching process, I learned to think in a clearer and more structured way. I became more aware of how I approach my work and decisions. I also strengthened my ability to pause before acting and consider different perspectives, and approach complex situations with greater clarity and balance. These skills are important when working in complex environments such as public institutions. They can support better decision-making and a more thoughtful approach to policy and institutional development.
