People First in FISR2: Investing in Our Team's Human Potential
In any ambitious project, progress is often measured in tangible outcomes: milestones reached, targets hit, and deliverables completed. Yet, the true engine of this progress is often the human element—the team itself. As we near the culmination of the FISR2 project, we recognize that our most significant stride forward hasn't just been in what we've built, but in how we've grown together.
The introduction of a dedicated coaching program for our Economic Reform Programme team in Bosnia and Herzegovina became the cornerstone of this growth. It was more than a training exercise; it was a journey of collective and individual discovery. The reflections from our team members below reveal the profound impact it has had, transforming not just our work dynamics but our personal perspectives.
A key takeaway shared by all was how coaching strengthened the team's dynamics as it provided the safe space necessary for genuine connection. One colleague noted, "Coaching has played a valuable role in strengthening our group dynamics. It has helped us enhance communication and refine our problem-solving skills. I have also learned more about my colleagues. Some things I knew before, but I think that now I am seeing them with different eyes." This view was strongly echoed by another, who shared, "It was a process in which I felt a true connection with my colleagues, but also a deeper understanding of myself... trust and a sense of security were created, which allowed us all to be ourselves and open. This, almost imperceptibly, changed everyday work as well."
This newfound trust had immediate, practical benefits, leading to a "higher level of mutual understanding and cooperation" within the team. It’s funny how the best journeys often start out feeling simple. That’s exactly how this process felt. We began with what seemed like straightforward introductory exercises, but before we knew it, we were diving into some really meaningful self-reflection. It never felt forced; it just naturally went deeper. One of the biggest "lightbulb moments" came from our facilitator's metaphor of "backpacks." It hit home for all of us. The idea is that everyone shows up each day carrying their own invisible backpack, stuffed with their unique experiences, past struggles, and personal expectations. Realizing that completely shifted the vibe—it instantly built so much understanding and empathy within our team.
But the real magic happened in those personal breakthroughs. We were really moved by one colleague's story. He shared a powerful personal insight: "For the first time, I could clearly see which decisions in life I had made for myself, and which were made for me by others. It was an emotional but powerful moment. I found a way to forgive, and that insight finally brought me peace." It was a reminder that this work isn't just about professional skills; it's about real, human growth. Another appreciated the structure it brought to their self-perception: "My thoughts about myself are more structured, and I am more open to changes in my life." It’s like they found a new internal compass.
The best part? This wasn’t just a temporary boost. The tools we gained are sticking with us, long after the official sessions ended. We walked away with some very powerful insights that are already changing how we work and connect. Here’s what that looks like in real life:
- Getting to Know Ourselves: People started seeing their own emotions, motivations, and patterns with much more clarity. As one person shared, “I gained greater self-awareness and a stronger ability to navigate challenges.”
- Finding Our "Why": For some of us, the biggest win was a newfound sense of purpose. One colleague expressed it perfectly when she shared how the concept of ikigai—a Japanese idea about finding your "reason for being" - helped her make sense of it all: "The biggest gift was finally understanding my 'why.' It helped me connect my values, my strengths, and what I truly want to bring to the world through my work."
- The Magic of Listening: We learned that the most powerful conversations aren’t about having the most to say—they’re about being fully present. Someone highlighted this beautifully, noting, "I learned how small questions, silence, and just being present are secretly powerful tools." It’s a skill we’re all excited to keep practicing.
- Spark for More Growth: Perhaps the best sign of success? We didn't want it to end! The whole experience fueled a real hunger to keep this growth going. It wasn’t just a program; it was the spark for a lasting journey.
This coaching journey was a powerful reminder that the most complex systems we work on are often human. By investing in understanding ourselves and each other, we didn't just improve our collaboration—we unlocked a deeper level of empathy, resilience, and purpose. The FISR2 project may be concluding, but the capabilities and connections formed in this process will undoubtedly be the crown jewel we carry forward into everything we do next.
